The part of the kitchen that overlaps with storage

This is a short shelf and it is short on purpose. What we make for a kitchen worktop is the part that is really a container: the crocks that hold utensils upright, the bowls that stack, the holders that keep something to hand.

The test for anything on this shelf is the same as for a bin. Where does it live when it is not in use, and does it earn that space? A gadget that has to be put away between uses is competing for the drawer, and the drawer is already full.
